Rendering & Re-rendering to Stonework, Blockwork & Brick

Rendering External Walls

External wall renderings serve two purposes. The primary purpose is to act as a skin to the building and prevent water penetrating the walls causing damp inside the house. The secondary purpose is decorative.

Many of the older stone built properties in North Wales are better described as rubble built and correct rendering, in good condition is vital. Otherwise, in our wet climate, the house may become that damp that it is a health hazard, growing black mould on the walls.

Re-rendering Walls

If the existing render has cracks, even small fine cracks, these allow water to penetrate which not only causes damp inside the property but also further damages the existing rendering. The longer the problem is left, the worse it will become.

It is only by close inspection that the best solution to cracked renderings can be decided. Sometimes small areas can be stripped back re-rendered, matching the finish coat to the existing render.

If the damage is extensive or, as sometimes happens with badly applied concrete render, the render has pulled away from the wall leaving a void behind then the most cost-effective long term answer will be to strip the old render and completely re-render the walls.

Cement Rendering to External Walls

Cement renders act as a protective skin, preventing water from penetrating into the walls and causing damp problems in the house. To be effective and long lasting, cement rendering must be properly applied. This usually involves applying two or three thin coats of cement render rather than one thick coat

Lime Rendering to External Walls

Lime Rendered Cottage

Traditional Lime Rendered Cottage

Lime renders are the traditional way of protecting poor quality walls built from rubble stone or porous brick in exposed wet locations and where the wind would drive water into the wall.

Lime renders work differently to cement renderings in that they absorb rain like a sponge and then allow it to evaporate instead of soaking through into the wall and eventually the house.

Lime renderings require more skill and knowledge than concrete renderings but whichever you require we have the experience to take on the job.
